How to Speak "Barber"

Communication is the key to a great haircut. But sometimes, it feels like barbers speak a different language. Here is a glossary of common terms to help you explain exactly what you want.

The Fade

A fade means the hair gets gradually shorter towards the bottom. You can ask for a low, mid, or high fade, depending on where you want the blending to start.

Taper

Often confused with a fade, a taper is less dramatic. It usually refers to the hair getting shorter at the neckline and sideburns, leaving the natural hairline visible.

Texture

Asking for texture means you want the barber to cut into the bulk of the hair to create separation and movement. This is great for messy, modern styles.

Disconnect

A disconnected cut has a sharp contrast between long and short areas, without blending. Think of an undercut where the sides are shaved and the top is long.
